Hobbies

While I believe in a high standard of effort and performance from every student, I have worked much of my adult life tutoring at a group home for foster youth who had a variety of behavioral and learning disabilities ranging from dyslexia to ADHD to test anxiety to utter defiance. I have come to appreciate the challenges and hidden potential that comes with each student and picked up some tricks to address each limitation. Often we all fall on a spectrum of one of these disorders without realizing it. It takes an intimate understanding of the student as an individual to know what will "click" with them. Therefore I am a strong believer in personality testing and learning types to aid in this understanding, and I have found that shaving cream, sidewalk chalk, dry erase boards and markers, cassette tapes, computer games and mnemonic songs are far better teaching utensils than pen and paper, the playground a superior learning center to the classroom. Textbooks are mere decor.
